This city was known as America’s “Black Wall Street”.
During the early 20th century the Greenwood district of Tulsa was founded and occupied by predominately black families. Due to its prosperity and success this city was known as America’s “Black Wall Street”. Consequently its affluent nature would have the city and its inhabitants fall victim to jealousy and hate. Although destroyed in race riots this piece depicts and pays homage to a Tulsa untainted, founded, run and thriving solely off the efforts of its citizens. We remember and honor those who lost their lives in this massacre but more importantly we carry on the idea that what was accomplished in this city was and is still possible.
