Gaspar Yanga led Maroons out of enslavement from Spanish rule.
This town currently located in Veracruz is named after a revolutionary African-Mexican, Gaspar Yanga who led Maroons out of enslavement from Spanish rule. He successfully resisted attacks against colonizers and led raids on their settlements, because of this an agreement was made for him to govern his town. Yanga town is still currently predominately Afro-Mexican. Located in the town square is a statue of Gaspar Yanga but right behind him is a quiet little sitting area with a gazebo which is pictured in this painting.
