This Matriarch Mary McLeod-Bethune is the founder of Bethune-Cookman University located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Born to former slaves she valued the right to education and became an educator herself starting the school with only 9 girls. She spent her life as not only an educator but also a civil rights and political activist.
